Hojalata y Lámina was founded in 1943
 
Origin

Although ALFA was founded in 1974, it’s roots can be traced to the end of the 19th century when its first subsidiaries promoted the economic development of the northeast region of Mexico.
 


First HYL® plant, Monterrey.
 
HYL® Technology

Technicians from Hojalata y Lámina developed the HYL® technology, an iron ore reduction process.

The beginning

Three main companies incorporated ALFA: Hojalata y Lamina (steel), Empaques de Cartón Titán (packaging) and Draco (mining), and a minority interest in Televisa (TV broadcasting).

Diversification starts

ALFA designs a growth and diversification strategy that leads to the synthetic fiber, petrochemical and electronics businesses. The companies Nylon de Mexico and Polioles join ALFA.

 


Casolar Hotel, Manzanillo, Colima.
 
Enters into tourism and capital goods

The companies are grouped under three divisions: Steel, Paper & Packaging, and Industries. Fibras Químicas (now Akra Polyester) is acquired. Casolar (tourism) and Megatek (capital goods) were founded. Nova, an activity and family development/ medical center was also founded in Monterrey.

Petrotemex acquisition

The petrochemical and steel operations expand with the acquisition of Petrocel and La Florida (now Galvak), respectively. ALFA’s shares are quoted in the Mexican Stock Exchange and the ALFA Planatarium was inaugurated.

Enters into auto components

ALFA enters a partnership with Ford to establish Nemak a producer of aluminum cylinder heads. ALFA’s operations expand producing agricultural machinery, motorcycles, home appliances and steel specialties.

 


Sigma products.
 
Enters into food business

The companies that later are combined to incorporate Sigma Alimentos are purchased. As a result of a dynamic growth, in only six years, ALFA becomes one of the largest companies in Mexico. The strategic alliances of ALFA were expanded including companies such as Akzo, BASF, Hitachi, Ford, Kawasaki and Siemens.
